Religious Civil War
As I mentioned in my last post, the Religious Right in this country claims that gays, secular humanists, etc. have declared war on them. This mentality doesn't always limit itself to hand-wringing, screeches of persecution, and self-comparison to the martyrs of old. Sometimes, it includes vandalizing and burning church property.
Remember my previous post about the United Church of Christ and their gay-friendly ad? Well, in Valrico, Florida, a UCC church was vandalized and their parish house was set on fire. Their church banner proclaiming 'God is still speaking', the slogan for the ad, was specifically vandalized. Has this caught the attention of the media? Why, no! There hasn't even been a blurb in the 'crime' or 'incident' sections of the Florida papers. I can say this with fair confidence after searching through Newbank for the past week.
To add insult to injury, ABC accepted an ad from Focus on the Family to run during the season finale of their 'Supernanny' show. It's an ad pushing their child-rearing site, a little less controversial than the UCC ad the networks refused to air, but I still smell a little hypocrisy here.
If you would like to send letters of support to the church, address them to:
